Bog Post # 52

"Down River"
  • If you were Tally, would you ask the Warden to make you pretty.

-Yes, because it is the only way to get Shay back to normal. Also, it might be the only way to gain a bit of forgiveness.

Blog Post # 51

"Confessions"
  • Tally has finally come clean. Do you think she will regret it? Do you think David will change his mind about her?

- I don't think she will regret telling them because she knows that everyone knows the truth and aren't under some pretense that she is perfect. I think David will not see her as beautiful anymore.

Blog Post # 50

"Hippocratic Oath"
  • Should Maddy have forced Shay to take the "cure?" Why or why not?

- Yes because Shay would have hated herself if the lesions weren't in her mind. Even if there is a risk, it is a very small one, and it would be worth it.

Blog Post # 49

"Night Alone"
  • If you were Shay, would you get the cure? Why or why not?

- Well, she already has lesions in her brain, so she doesn't think the same. She thinks being pretty is the most awesome thing, so no I wouldn't.

Blog Post # 48

"Get Away"
  • Respond to the following quote from the chapter- what does it mean to you?

" Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancers or wounds or whatever they are that she didn't even know she had. They were in there somewhere changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."

- Shay doesn't know or mean what she is saying. Her brain is warped by the lesions.

Blog Post # 47

"Rescue"
  • Give a chronological list of important events in the chapter. What's the kicker at the end of the chapter?
  1. Shay and tally talk and Tally finds that Shay has totally changed
  2. Shay gets in on the trick and talks to the Specials on the phone
  3. They break everyone out of jail
  4. They head up to the roof

- The kicker at the end of the chapter is that Maddy tells David his father is dead.

Blog Post 46

"Inside"

  • Is this quote a play on words, or does it have a deeper meaning to the story?
  • "Radiology, Neurology, Magnetic Imaging," she read softly." Operating Theatre Two."

- They all have to do with medical stuff and some with the mind.

  • What "labels" do Tally and David find in the Special Circumstances building? Give a BRIEF description of what you think each means.

- Morgue: Where they put dead people

- Interrogation room 1: Where they interrogate people

-Interrogation room 2: Where they interrogate people

-Isolation room 1: A room where they put people alone until they almost go crazy

-Disorientation room 1: Where they knock out people

- Long term Detention: Where they keep people prisoner

- Radiology: X-rays and other medical stuff

- Neurology: Nerves and brain stuff

- Magnetic Imaging: A room where a machine finds magnetic stuff in the body

  • Describe Shay's appearance at the end of the chapter using textual evidence.

- "She was tall and elegant, every feature was perfection. Her eyes deep and soulful, flecked with copper and gold."

Blog Post # 45

"Over the Edge"
  • In this chapter a few uglies go to New Pretty town to do a "trick." They make the words "THE SMOKE LIVES" with sparklers. If you had ONE chance to post a message important to you, what would it be and why?

- The message I would put is "BLONDES AREN'T DUMB!" I would put that message because blondes get criticized everyday!

Blog Post # 44

"Accomplices"
  • The Uglies they met in this chapter are similar to Tally at the beginning of the book. When you compare her to these Uglies, how has Tally changed and what has made her change?

- Tally has been and seen bigger things and those tricks seem so boring now because of the Smoke. She is also more serious now.

Blog Post # 43

"Familiar Sights"
  • Do you think Tally's plan will work? David wants to save his parents, but what is driving Tally? Do you think she is crazy, or are her feelings valid?

- I think her plan will work. I think what is driving Tally is total guilt. Also, she really likes people in the Smoke and loves David. Her feelings are valid because she should feel guilty.

Blog Post 42

"Oil Plague"
  • How do David and Tally describe the Rusties? Is it accurate?

- The describe us as if we were so idiotic, using everything we could find. I think they are partly right. We do use up things without even thinking about it. For example, we put gas in our cars like it is an everlasting source.

  • What are the weaknesses of OUR society?

- We rely on oil way too much

  • What are weaknesses of THEIR society

- They are separated and under this delusion that everyone is ugly before the operation.

-There are lesions in pretties' minds

Blog Post # 41

"Maddy and Az"
  • Find information and a picture about a time we weren't prepared. (i.e. a natural disaster or attack). Post the information and cite it.

- The surprise was complete. The attacking planes came in two waves; the first hit it's target at 7:53 A.M., the second at 8:55. By 9:55 it was all over. By 1:00 P.M. the carriers that launched the planes were 274 miles off the coast in Oahu were heading back to Japan.

Behind them they left chaos, 2,403 dead, 188 destroyed planes and crippled pacific fleet that included 8 damaged or destroyed battleships. In one stroke, the Japanese action destroyed the debate that divided Americans since the German defeat of France left England alone in the fight against Nazi terror.

About 3 hours later, Japanese planes began a day- long attack on American facilities in the Philippines. (Because the islands were located on the international dateline, the local Philippine time was 5 A.M. on December). Farther to the west, Japanese struck at Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Thailand in a coordinate attempt to use surprise in order to inflict damage as quickly as possible to strategic targets.

Blog Post 40

"Ruin"
  • Describe the irony in Tally's "victory" over Dr. Cable. What was lost in the process?

- Even though Tally got away from the specials, the Smokies are still back there. Also, all the Rusties' history was lost.

Blog Post # 39

"Run"
  • Is David right? Is Tally amazing? Do you think Tally should be feeling guilty? Why or why not?

- Yes, I think David is right. Tally is amazing because she decided that she wouldn't reveal the Smoke and stay ugly, which is a big deal to her. Plus, she wants to save David's parents and risk her mind.

Blog Post #38

"Run"
  • Who is the voice in the dark? Do you think it will be a friend or enemy to Tally? What do you think Tally should do now?

- I think the mysterious voice in the dark will be a friend. I think Tally should go to the voice because even if it is an enemy, she is tough and she could escape if she really tried.

Blog Post # 37

"In Case of Damage"
  • Explain what self preservation means to you.

- I think self preservation is making sure you are able to do a thing you want to do in the future, and letting no one stop you from accomplishing it.

  • Is it the most important thing?

- Yes, because if you don't have it then you might not accomplish anything.

  • Would you lie because of it?

- Depends on the situation, but yes. For example, Tally had to lie to the Specials , in order to escape.

Blog Post # 36

"The Rabbit Pen"
  • Tally had changed her mind about the Smoke and the operation, but what will she do about all that now? Who's side is she on?

- I think she will find a way to escape and fight the Specials. Of course, she is on the Smokies' side.

Blog Post # 35

"Invasion"
  • Is this the climax of the book? Explain why or why not you think do in a few sentences.

- Yes, because everything was settled. Tally would stay at the Smoke with David. Now the plan got changed when Special Circumstances dropped by.

Blog Post # 34

"Burning Bridges "
  • Read the following quote David says to Tally.

"What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful."

  • Name one person in your personal (home) life and one in your academic life (you may leave them nameless if you wish)...what makes this person beautiful?

- In my academic life, my friend is so hilarious and kind that it makes me forget all about his appearance.

- In my home life, there is this person that does her own thing and always is a loving, funny person.

Blog Post #33

"Pretty Minds"
  • Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you/to the story?

"Becoming pretty doesn't just change the way you look... it changes the way you think." How would you want to change mentally and physically if you were pretty?(think...habits,intelligence,and physical attributes)

- I would like to have brown hair and royal blue eyes, or emerald green eyes. I would like to be more outgoing, too.

Blog Post # 32

"The Secret"
  • What does the following quote tell you about the city and society in general?

" But you do know about genetics don't you?"

" Sure I know all about genes. I knew two sisters, uglies, who looked almost the same. But parents and children? That's just weird."

- The city taught the uglies that siblings had the same genes, but not parents and children. It made sense to them because their parents were so pretty, they didn't look anything alike.

  • Predict what you think being "pretty " is.

- "Pretty" is everybody thinking the same. Sort of like mind control, maybe.

Blog Post # 31

"Bravery"
  • Find an example of:

Imagery- "... the orchids glowed with pale malevolence in the moonlight, a frozen sea against the dark shore of the forest."

Personification" But the moonlight and setting, or maybe the words he was saying , had somehow turned David pretty."

Simile-"Dr. Cable's pendant seemed to grow heavier and heavier, wound around her neck as tightly as vines. brush, and roots grasping the railroad tracks."

  • Does it require bravery to meet David's parents, why or why not?

- Yes, because she is still deciding if she is going to betray them and activate the pendant.

Blog Post # 30

"Suspicion"
  • Do you think Shay has a right to be jeolous of Tally? Why or why not?

-I think Shay has the right to be totally jeolous of Tally. I think that because Shay really likes David and David likes her best friend. Plus, Tally just showed up and David likes her. Shay has known David before for a long time, but David still doesn't like her as much as Tally. Also, Tally doesn't even try to wow him.

  • Tally recieved a gift from David in the chapter that is special. Have you ever recieved something that made others jeolous as this gift did? Did your gift have a meaning behind it as Tally's has.

- Yes, I have gotten a gift like Tally's. I got a big huge teddy bear on Valentines Day from my friend, Josh. It was holding a little heart saying I love you, so obviously it had a meaning behind it.

Blog Post # 29

"Hearththrob"
  • Why would it be easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the smoke? Explain.

- It would be easier for Tally if she activated the pendant when she first got here because she wouldn't get attached to the people there. Now that she knows that David has lived there his entire life and that it is his home, she can hardly take away his home without feeling unbelievably guilty. Plus, Tally has gotten close to Shay again.

Blog Post # 28

"David"

  • If David's parents were doctors, why do you think they ran away? Support your answer with textual evidence.
- I think David's parents ran away because they didn't want to do the operation on anyone else.

"They reversed the operation"

Blog Post # 27

"Work"

  • Find an image of a skyline like the one Tally sees. Post it.

  • What is beautiful about it?

- I love the lights on it and how everything seems to center around the skyliners. I love how they seem to be able to touch the serene clouds.

  • Is there anything ugly about it?

-They don't look natural

Blog Post # 26

"The Model" Pg. 195
  • What do you think about Shay's description of a model? Shay and Tally have a skewed view of our time, but what have they got right? (1 paragraph)

- I think that she is sort of right, in a way.

- I think she has gotten the really ugly ones are politicians, right. Plus, a lot of comedians are really fat sometimes. Now not all musicians have stringy hair, but a lot of them do. The Beetles have stringy hair, so that is why I think she is right about that.

Blog Post # 25

"Lies" pg. 187
  • Characterization: David
- kind

- smart

- serious

- male

- lived in smoke all his life

- 18 years old

- likes Tally

- likes Shay

- helps Uglies escape to the Smoke

- likes hard work

  • Find a picture to represent what YOU think the Smoke looks like and post it on your blog with an explanation of why you chose it.

- I chose this picture because in the book, it says:

"From the top, they looked down into a small valley that was mostly clear of forest."

Blog post # 24

"Bug Eyes" Pg. 178
  • List the important events of the chapter in chronological order.
  1. The rangers get Tally into the chopper.
  2. The rangers save her life.
  3. The rangers tell her about the orchids. (they are a biological zoo).
  4. They tell her they drop off Uglies who want to live in the Smoke.
  5. They drop her off.
  6. Tally heads toward a hill.
  • Respond to the following quote:

"... Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only way home was to betray her friend."

-If she didn't rat Shay out, then the Special Circumstances people wouldn't let her turn pretty. If she stayed, she would be ugly for the rest of her life.

Blog Post # 23

"Firestorm" pg. 172
  • Give one example of each of these from the chapter:

Imagery- "Ragged walls of flames moved through the flowers, giving off a wave of blistering heat."

Personification- "Fingers of it shot through the hill."

Simile- "Sounded like roaring wind."

Blog post # 22

"The side you despise" pg. 164
  • What do you think the flying machine was? Who was in it? Make a prediction.

- I think the flying machine was a helicopter.

- I think the Smokies were in it because they thought she was an intruder and threat.

- I think that they will take her somewhere to question her.

Blog Post # 21

"The Worst Mistake" pg. 156
  • Have you ever made yourself do something that you didn't want to do because you knew you had to?

- I hate making a big deal of my birthday. My mom insisted we have a huge party with like 40 of my friends. Now I didn't want to do the party, but my mom is a big party planner and I knew that it would hurt her feelings if I didn't do it. So, of course, I threw the party.

  • Predict what you think will happen next. (i.e. What is coming)

- I think Tally will find the Smokies.
