Bog Post # 52

"Down River"
  • If you were Tally, would you ask the Warden to make you pretty.

-Yes, because it is the only way to get Shay back to normal. Also, it might be the only way to gain a bit of forgiveness.

"Confessions"
  • Tally has finally come clean. Do you think she will regret it? Do you think David will change his mind about her?

- I don't think she will regret telling them because she knows that everyone knows the truth and aren't under some pretense that she is perfect. I think David will not see her as beautiful anymore.

"Hippocratic Oath"
  • Should Maddy have forced Shay to take the "cure?" Why or why not?

- Yes because Shay would have hated herself if the lesions weren't in her mind. Even if there is a risk, it is a very small one, and it would be worth it.

"Night Alone"
  • If you were Shay, would you get the cure? Why or why not?

- Well, she already has lesions in her brain, so she doesn't think the same. She thinks being pretty is the most awesome thing, so no I wouldn't.

"Get Away"
  • Respond to the following quote from the chapter- what does it mean to you?

" Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancers or wounds or whatever they are that she didn't even know she had. They were in there somewhere changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."

- Shay doesn't know or mean what she is saying. Her brain is warped by the lesions.

"Rescue"
  • Give a chronological list of important events in the chapter. What's the kicker at the end of the chapter?
  1. Shay and tally talk and Tally finds that Shay has totally changed
  2. Shay gets in on the trick and talks to the Specials on the phone
  3. They break everyone out of jail
  4. They head up to the roof

- The kicker at the end of the chapter is that Maddy tells David his father is dead.

"Inside"

  • Is this quote a play on words, or does it have a deeper meaning to the story?
  • "Radiology, Neurology, Magnetic Imaging," she read softly." Operating Theatre Two."

- They all have to do with medical stuff and some with the mind.

  • What "labels" do Tally and David find in the Special Circumstances building? Give a BRIEF description of what you think each means.

- Morgue: Where they put dead people

- Interrogation room 1: Where they interrogate people

-Interrogation room 2: Where they interrogate people

-Isolation room 1: A room where they put people alone until they almost go crazy

-Disorientation room 1: Where they knock out people

- Long term Detention: Where they keep people prisoner

- Radiology: X-rays and other medical stuff

- Neurology: Nerves and brain stuff

- Magnetic Imaging: A room where a machine finds magnetic stuff in the body

  • Describe Shay's appearance at the end of the chapter using textual evidence.

- "She was tall and elegant, every feature was perfection. Her eyes deep and soulful, flecked with copper and gold."
